Unfortunately this usually means you will lose any
Mail in the Mailbox. Start | Find Files | type inbox*
| look in c:\ |
In OE4 you should find two files Inbox.idx and inbox.mbx
In OE5 you should find 1 inbox with the extension
.dbx
Delete the files and they will be recreated when
you next open Outlook Express.
How do I backup and restore mail
in Outlook Express.
1st Backup the e-mail then Close Outlook Express. Click Start, Find,
then Files
or Folders. In the Named box, enter *.mbx In the Look in box
select, your hard drive (usually C:). Find Now
You should now see a list of your Outlook Express mailbox files. "Inbox.mbx",
"Outbox.mbx", "
Sent Items.mbx", "Deleted Items.mbx" and "Drafts.mbx" Any additional
mail folders you have created in Outlook Express will be displayed with
the ".mbx" extension. Highlight all the mailbox files that you wish to
back up and copy them to another location such as a floppy disk or an appropriately
name folder.
Restoring the backed-up e-mail
Close Outlook Express. Identify where your ".mbx" files are stored
in Outlook Express, and copy
your backed-up email folders to this directory, ensuring that
you overwrite any existing files.
Delete the folders.nch file. Outlook Express saves all the messages
in each mail folder with an .mbx extension and you'll usually find them
in either C:\ WINDOWS\ Application Data\ Microsoft\ Outlook Express\
Mail or C:\ Program Files\ Outlook Express\ Default User\ Mail - the
exact locations depends on your setup. You should have an .mbx file for
each mail folder, plus a corresponding set of .idx files
(Which you can ignore!), plus a file named folders.nch, which stores
the folders names. To back up your mail, clean out any garbage using: File,
Folders, Compact all Folders, then duplicate the .mbx files. They're often
quite large, so ideally you will need a Zip disk or Network access. You
can then copy the duplicates back into the mail folder if the originals
get corrupted!
Please note: in OE5 they have a .dbx extension the
mail folder store can be located from

This error message is coming from the mail server, not from OE itself. It means that the SMTP (outgoing) mail server did not recognize you as an authorized user and so rejected your message. Most ISPs configure their SMTP servers to recognize only those whose IP address is on the accepted list, meaning that you are connected directly to that ISP. If you use multiple ISPs, you are likely to encounter this problem. The solution is to change the SMTP server for that mail account under Tools| Accounts|

Larger than: box. In the Size: box, type in the lowest size of message
that you want it to delete e.g. 500 KB. Any messages of this size or above
will be deleted from the server when you next download your mail. Tick
Delete off server, and click on OK. This will return you to the "Inbox

To send large messages using OE4
Many mail and news servers limit the size of messages that can be received
and sent. Usually this limit is 1MB per message including the attached
files. With Outlook Express you can send large messages or files to mail
or newsgroups that limit the size of messages they can receive by breaking
the message into smaller ones when the group of messages are received the
mail program recombines them into one message.
How? go to tools | accounts | Mail | properties | Advanced | select

Leave a copy of messages on server
If you want to be able to store a copy of your email messages on the
server, then there is a setting in Outlook Express that allows you to do
this. Warning : If you let your email messages build up to much then the
amount of messages will slow down your access to your email. The first
thing you will need to do is open up Outlook Express,

using win98 SE, has installed the Virgin Net software and has run the

Clicking "New Mail" or trying to view any messages in the inbox give
the error "There was an error opening this message - an error occurred".
Right then...
1) Start -> Run -> sfc
2) Click "Extract one file from installation disk"
3) Type the file name as "wab32.dll"
4) Click Start
5) Restore from: c:\windows\options\cabs (or wherever the cabs are)
6) Save file in: c:\program files\ Common files\ System and click OK
7) Exit the System File Checker
This is a quick fix
8)Drag the OE5 icon from the QuickLaunch toolbar into the bin
9) Reboot (log on to windows if you wish)
10) Advise csmr to only use the desktop OE5 icon (not the "Mail" icon
in IE5)
1) Remove Outlook Express This can be done in 1 of two ways.
i) Check Add / Remove Programs, if it exists there remove it
ii) If it doesn't exist there go into Windows Setup and remove from
there (Windows 98 only!).
2) Restart (This is required )
3) Rename the Outlook Express folder in Program Files directory on the Hard
Disk, I always suggest dropping the last character and renaming to Outlook
old, this makes it easier to remember.
4) Reinstall OE (By far the easiest method seems to be to go to the
Windows update site http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com although this isn't
ideal, it gets the correct version for their install of IE/OE) Failing that
reinstall from the latest IE5 disk available, this will then re-install OE5.
We could send out one of our disks if they do not have one available.
5) Restart

For copying dbx files from one profile to another or from one
machine to another:
In Outlook Express create a folder called whatever the .dbx file you
are copying eg if the file is called ISDN.dbx, then create a folder called
ISDN in Outlook Express.
Close Outlook Express
Find the store root of where the mail is stored eg c:\windows\application
data\string\microsoft\outlook express and replace the new .dbx file with
the one you wish to import.
Restart Outlook Express. The mail should now be viewable. Note that
this will overwrite any existing mails however
eg . if the inbox.dbx has 2 messages and the inbox.dbx you want to
copy has 16 then the 2 already there will be lost.
Want to block a sender
If you think you can afford to do without all mail from some particular
correspondent, use the Block Sender command.
In Outlook Express 5:
1. Click a message from the sender you want to block.
2. Choose Message + Block Sender. An Outlook Express dialog box appears,
telling you that the sender of this message has been added to your Blocked
Senders list. You won't be seeing any more mail from that person: It's
liquidated before it reaches your Inbox.
3. Click Yes in this box if you want to delete all current messages
from this sender; click No if you want a last look at them.

The customer has entered an incorrect e-mail address. The part of
the e-mail address that is incorrect i.e joe.bloggs@vigin.net
Fix:
Re-type the e-mail address, having confirmed the address with the intended
recipient. The Address Book entry for the recipient that failed, may need
deleting and re-entering to change it to the correct details. NB - The
customer may argue that they pressed "REPLY" button. You would, in this
case, advise tha customer that the person who mailed them has entered an
invalid "Reply To" address
Mail stuck and being repeated
If you are getting the same mail messages downloaded, you need to delete
up to and including the last message received. The last downloaded message
is at fault, as it is jamming in their inbox. Example:
Problem: A customer receives messages 1, 2 and 3 and cannot get messages
4, 5....
Fix:
Telnet (or Mail Manager) the mail account. Check that message 3 is
the last message that the customer has been able to get. Delete mail messages
1, 2 and 3. NOT MESSAGE 4. The error in Outlook Express may lead
you to believe that it is message 4 or 5 at fault.

The Virgin Net software and all the computers in the callcentre don't
have this option but Freeserve and some other ISP's do.
If you click "View" and select "Layout..." you are given the option
to display or remove
various "panes" or "bars" on the display of Outlook Express. The one
you are looking for
is called "Infopane" which when selected looks up a URL in the registry
and tries to connect to this site on the internet.
Take the tick out of the "Infopane" box and all is OK
MIME
Outlook Express 4 for Windows uses the MIME (Multipurpose Internet
Mail Extensions) format for encoding attachments. If you send a message
with an attachment, and the person on the other end complains that they
can't read the attachment, it could be that their email program doesn't
support MIME.
