WIN 3.1
On start up the main screen (Desktop) contains several files (boxes)
Start up contains applications that need to be started up when machine
is booted to prevent them starting remove them from this folder
Accessories contains calculator > notepad >Clock, stuff like
that
Program manager contains | File manager | control panel | windows settings
| print manager etc,etc.
File manager contains a list of all the directories (very similar
to explorer in win98/5
There are 4 com ports the modem will usually be on com 2 and the mouse
on com 1 If the modem is on com 3 or 4 then the jumpers on the modem or
on the motherboard need to be reset (refer to vendor)
From com port properties you can speed up access slightly by raising
speed settings to 19200 Kbs
From file manager >Vnet Directory >Netscape >dialer.exe
>this is the program for connection to the internet.
Below dialer.exe is a file
isp.sr drag to dialer.exe and drop to start connection.
Always drag the smaller isp.sr file to
the larger Dialer.exe file
You can look in properties of dialer.exe to set DNS settings if dial
on demand has a tick in the box clicking on Netscape will AutoDial
Open notepad > open vnet > Netscape > dialler > isp.sr
you can change settings here
File open > shivappp contains modem info
File open > modems.ini contains a list of the modems supported this
can be read in wordpad . find the driver you want and cut and paste the
text to modems.ini file
File open > reg.ini contains info Some
problems connecting after having a previous ISP Winsock corrupted Winsock
size should be 30,516 bytes Rename Winsock in Netscape dir to
Winsock .old then reload software Winsock should regenerate automatically
Area code in twice is a common problem Put Brackets around area code
to separate area code from tel number
Win3.1 is not intended for the internet the internet was not evolved
enough when 3.1 was in its prime
Win 3.1 doesn't work well with multiple ISPS
To uninstall Virgin Software
Find the file unvirgin.exe. It will be
in the Vnet Directory and remove the vnet software
It is worth checking the modem speed in isp.sr
should work at around 19200
How to select a 56k modem
in WFW
Windows 3.1 does not contain
any modem drivers or winsock software It uses what the installation provides
You can modify Modem strings
in modems2.ini (or modems.ini during pre-reg) If it is an external modem
the cust probably has com port problems.
Drop to DOS Type MSD [Enter]
Type C [Enter] look at the UARTS on
Com 1 & Com2 If they are 8250 the modem will not connect above 14400
(19200 uncompressed)
www.chasms.com
has an MSD walkthrough
If they are 16550 go back
to Windows Control Panel & select the Com Port applicable to the modem.
Set it to 115200 Hardware
(you cannot select 115200 from the dropdown list, you have to type it in)
Removing the URL History:in
Win3.1
1. File, Run, /Netscape/Netscape.ini,
search for URL history, the last section of this ini file is the URL history
which lists all of the customer's entries, highlight and delete the undesired
lists. Then go to "file" and "save".
Automatic re-dial in win 3.x
The Shiva software that comes with Netscape Navigator Personal Edition
(including DialUp Kit) for Windows 3.1 does not have any apparent
methods of setting an automatic redial if it encounters a busy signal
nor a way to set it to automatically reconnect if the line is dropped.
The following is how to set this up.
-Create a text file called shivappp.ini in the same directory as the
dialer software
-Create an [Options] section as shown:
[Options]
DialRetries=x; Set x equal to the number of times you want ShivaPPP
to retry after a failure.
-Create a [Reconnect] section in the same file as shown:
[Reconnect]
Enabled=Yes
Automatic=Yes
Integer divide by zero error
To fix it simply delete the cache file (after
explaining to the customer why you are doing this). The file you need
to remove is 'C:\VNet\Netscape\Cache\fat.db'. You may get an error on
running Netscape for the first time, but this will not appear again.
You will need to do this every time Netscape reports the error,
although it should stop it for a few moments.
Secondly, and again with 3.1, when you need to dial an outside line
(eg. put a 9 in front of the number) and you get the no dial tone
error. Simply enter the 9 into the CALL WAITING box, and select that
you wish to disable call waiting, then leave the outside line box
blank. Now when the customer dials they will get an outside line, and
no error message.
Win.3.11 dialler adds a 1 and it won't go after editing isp.sr
ISP.SR
should be associated. with "netscape connection file" in
c:\vnet\netscape\dialler
associate it with notepad.exe in c:\windows to edit it
set the international no. to =no
AND:
under [location:default location]
set dialaslongdistance to =no
This gets rid of the extra 1...
re-assoc. with netscape connection file.
Sometimes you have to do the same for netscape.sr too!
But it'll say international number=true
Just set to false
"No application is associated with the specified file. Create an
association by using File Manager"
When this happens, the file annoyingly doesn't launch, and the only way
to sort out the properties is using Notepad and
loading the isp.sr file manually. The problem with this is it becomes
tricky to change modem drivers etc whithout a
reinstall.
Well, I have a fix for this, if anyone is interested.....
If you highlight the actual 'Connection Properties' icon, then choose
"File" and "Properties" from the main menu, it gives
a Command Line and Working Directory. The Command Line will probably be
set to:
c:\vnet\netscape\dialer\isp.sr
what it SHOULD read to make it work properly is:
c:\vnet\netscape\dialer\dialer.exe isp.sr
So if you get the above error, simply change the Command Line to the
proper one.
Win 3.1 - cannot initialize modem
Open c:\windows\system.ini, scroll down to near the end, and look for
[Shivappp]
ClaimPort=0
Change that zero to the modem port number, Save the file and restart
Windows.
Win3.1 - unable to open communications port
change the modem port in isp.sr
DEFRAG THAT DRIVE MONTHLY
The Defrag utility rearranges things on your hard drive so that they aren't all interspersed and strewn around. This makes for faster operation and for more space to store new things. The more you save and erase from disk, the more often you should run Defrag.
Exit Windows.
Type defrag and press Enter.
Netscape caused a GPF in module pr16301.dll when trying to send mail or
receive mail.
It's the system clock
drop to DOS - type date - check the date and if necessary correct it.
then restart and type date again in DOS to check that the bios held the new
date.
Unable to Negotiate Dial - In Connection
This error can be caused by one of several problems either with the user's modem or even multiple winsock.dll's.
In order to solve this, try doing the following in this sequence :
If you are using a script, try doing a PAP login by unchecking the Automatic login via a script Enter only your username and password in the initial connect to window. If you can connect, problem lies in the script.
Check for multiple winsock.dll's using File Manager. Netscape looks for the one in c:\netscape. If there are additional ones, rename them to winsock.bak or some other extension besides dll. Some other third party software installS their winsock.dll's in the windows directory.
Check if you are using an RPI modem or Windows Accelerated modem. If you are, the version of Shiva Dialer that accompanies the Netscape software has a known bug that does not work with Rockwell Chipset Modems.
Try lowering the connect speed as it may be due to line interference. Setting the speed to 19200 or below may also cause you to be connected.
Can not write to file ctl3dv.dll
Most likely, you will see this error message during installation of Netscape Navigator Personal Edition. This error occurs because Netscape PE tries to install a newer version of the file when the previous one is being shared by Windows 3.1 operating system.
The solution is to locate this file and rename it to say CTL3DV.OLD. Then exit Windows and re-install Netscape PE again.
The remote computer you are dialling is not answering
It is possible that the remote modem may not be picking up or there may be a bad line. Plug a regular phone on to the modem line and dial the SuperLink number. If you still hear it ringing, then there is a definite problem with that line. Dial onto an Alternate number and see if the modem picks up. Report the problem to report@superlink.net or call Tech Support at (732) 432-5454.
Why do I get Comm overrun error messages ?
You may be able to solve the problem with one of the following tips :
Make sure that you're using a 16540 or 16550 UART as opposed to the older 8550 UART. Use MSD to check what UART you have on your computer.
Add the following statements to the [386Enh] section of your system.ini file:
comXfifo=1
comXbuffer=1024
comboosttime=8
Where X is the number of your Comm port.
Why do I get a Script Aborted error message
Generally, this message will appear if the script does not execute to completion. This could happen if the script is waiting for an input command like a carriage return or the result of a misconfigured script. In cases, like this, check your script Login.cmd for any missing words or for any incomplete syntax's like missing quotes at the end.
TODAY'S TIP: INSUFFICIENT MEMORY PLOYS
One of my most frustrating Windows moments is the "Insufficient Memory" warning. I install some great DOS game, eager to give it a spin, but when I run it the memory warning pops, and the game fails. What to do?
Use the PIF Editor to increase the KBRequired value
Use the PIF Editor to cut down the Display, Memory and Advanced options use of memory.
Use MemMaker to free more memory for the DOS program to use.
If these don't do the trick, buying more memory won't either. The problem isn't in the number of MB in the machine, but in having enough of the first 640K free for use.
